The Power of Group Therapy. We know that good mental health can improve quality of life and well-being. Group therapy plays a key role to that end. The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health is dedicated to changing lives through therapeutic group work by advancing the most effective and innovative approaches to group therapy education, training, research and community outreach.

We value group therapy and want people to have the best mental health services available. The communities in which we live and work are facing a mental health crisis in which there is a great need for services and a shortage of providers. Evidence is now clear that group interventions are at the forefront of treatments to heal trauma, improve individual, family, and workplace relationships, and address a variety of mental health conditions. The effectiveness and efficiency of group therapy means it can play a key role in addressing mental health needs in our communities.

Education, training, research and community programs assure the advancement of the most innovative group work that can enhance people’s lives. The Group Foundation is a key supporter of efforts to…

  • Support local communities to help those affected by traumatic events such as shootings, fires, hurricanes and floods.
  • Provide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion trainings, curricula development and other initiatives toward a culturally responsive, anti-racist mental health community and workforce.
  • Provide financial support for the annual AGPA Connect as well as year-round distance learning, to aid practitioners in updating and enhancing their knowledge and skills.
  • Develop resources and research demonstrating the effectiveness of group therapy, including a Group Therapy Evidence-Based website that serves as a huge resource for the field and improves access to resources on groups for a wide variety of patient populations and diagnoses.
