Anne Alonso Scholarship
The Anne Alonso Scholarship, established in 2002 in honor of Anne Alonso, Ph.D., CGP, AGPA-DF, a distinguished teacher, trainer, practitioner, and prominent theoretician, will recognize demonstrated excellence in psychodynamic group psychotherapy. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Donald T. Brown GLBT Memorial Scholarship
The Donald T. Brown GLBT Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to helping clinicians-in-training participate in AGPA and Affiliate Society activities by attending AGPA Connect. Before his death of AIDS in 1988, Donald Brown participated with dedication and exuberance in the national and local governance of the AGPA. He was especially interested in the teaching and supervision of group psychotherapists. This Scholarship intends to encourage group therapists identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender or working predominantly with these communities to attend AGPA Connect. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Barry Bukatman, M.D. Memorial AGPA Scholarship
The Barry Bukatman, M.D. Memorial AGPA Scholarship, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Society, honors the memory of Barry Bukatman, M.D. who was President-Elect of the Society at the time of his death in 2002. Preference will be given to a MAGPS member enrolled full-time in an accredited training program or is a new professional in the first three years since graduation.
Josephine M. Cunningham Tervalon Scholarship
The Josephine M. Cunningham Tervalon Scholarship was established in 1999 in honor of Josephine M. Cunningham Tervalon, MSW, CGP, AGPA-F, a role model, mentor, teacher, supervisor, and leader, who has inspired the development of many colleagues, particularly women in the practice of group psychotherapy. This Scholarship was established to evoke and encourage women of color to further their professional development and training. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Chuck Dachis Scholarship
This fund will support a scholarship for AGPA Connect for a student, new professional, or agency employee who demonstrates academic and clinical promise in group psychotherapy and needs financial support to attend. It will cover up to a 6-day registration for the meeting as well as a travel stipend.
Barbara and Albert Dazzo Scholarship
The fund will support a scholarship for the AGPA Annual Training Week for a student, resident, or new professional delivering group services in a not-for-profit mental healthcare delivery system such as a community healthcare organization, hospital, clinic, or agency with a preference for those working with underserved populations. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Durkin-Glatzer Scholarship
The Durkin-Glatzer Scholarship was established in 1985 to commemorate the pioneering work of Helen Durkin, Ph.D., AGPA-DF, and Henriette Glatzer, Ph.D., AGPA-DF, outstanding thinkers, teachers, and clinicians whose efforts set a standard of excellence in the field of group psychotherapy. The Scholarship encourages women entering or re-entering the field of group psychotherapy who show promise of making substantial contributions to the field to become actively involved in AGPA early in their careers. The annual Scholarship includes up to the six-day tuition for AGPA Connect and a travel stipend.
Howard and Barbara Goldstein Scholarship
This Scholarship has been established in the name of Howard and Barbara Goldstein, who have had a long-standing dedication to the growth and development of children. It is to be awarded to an individual demonstrating a deep interest in working with children and/or adolescents. The recipient is to be chosen from those therapists who wish to improve their ability to empower children beyond what might have been thought possible due to their difficult, earlier childhood experiences. The annual Scholarship includes up to the six-day tuition for the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference and a travel stipend.
Sally B. Henry International Scholarship
This fund will support at least one international attendee annually at AGPA Connect, and/or E-Learning programming and CGP Certification fees, including training leading to the CGP certification.
Ruth Hochberg Scholarship
The Ruth Hochberg Scholarship is presented to a single-parent, woman clinician to further her group psychotherapy education and training to enable her to attend AGPA Connect. The Scholarship was established in honor of Ruth Hochberg, Ph.D., CGP, AGPA-DF, a long-time contributor to group psychotherapy, AGPA, and the Group Foundation, and a long-time supporter of women’s issues. The award covers up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and a travel stipend.
Institute for Individual and Group Psychotherapy Scholarship
This scholarship is available to graduate students training in psychodynamic group therapy as well as early career therapists using the combined model of individual and group therapy. Preference will be given to those who have been in individual or group therapy themselves and in respect to the Institute’s geographical origins to those who reside in Michigan. The scholarship will cover up to a 6-day registration for AGPA Connect as well as a travel stipend.
International Scholarship
The International Scholarship is awarded to group therapists from economically disadvantaged countries, allowing highly qualified candidates to participate in AGPA Connect. Up to the six-day tuition and travel funds are provided.
iScholarship
The iScholarship endowment supports an innovative three-year scholarship that provides mentorship and financial support for a candidate interested in the internet, social media, technology, e-learning, e-health, and telemedicine and increasing engagement with AGPA. In addition, the iScholarship includes support of attendance at the Annual AGPA Connect Meeting for the term of the Scholarship and additional activities to promote professional development and engagement with the group therapy community.
Lorelle H. Machen, Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship
The fund will support a Scholarship for AGPA Connect for an individual who demonstrates experience in or a commitment to work in an agency or institutional setting with the severe and persistent mentally ill. The Scholarship was endowed by Leslie Vestrich and Eleanor Counselman in memory of Leslie’s mother (Eleanor’s Aunt), who spent much of her career working on behalf of this population. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Jacob and Zerka Moreno Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is supported by the Jacob and Zerka Moreno Foundation for Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy, and will provide support to a psychodrama student who demonstrates both promise and passion for the theory and practice of psychodrama and sociometry. The scholarship will cover up to a 6-day registration for AGPA Connect as well as a travel stipend.
Red Well Theater Group Scholarship
The Red Well Theater Group Scholarship endowment will support an annual scholarship for an international student or early career professional to attend AGPA Connect. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Kathy and Kent Rider Scholarship
The fund will support a scholarship for AGPA Connect for a clinical social worker who is a new professional or student. It will cover up to a 6-day registration for the meeting as well as a travel stipend.
Saul Scheidlinger Scholarship
The Saul Scheidlinger Scholarship was established in 1999 to celebrate more than 60 years of dedication to groups and group psychotherapy and the leadership and devotion to AGPA by Saul Scheidlinger, Ph.D., CGP, AGPA-DF. Annually, up to a six-day tuition scholarship and a travel stipend to attend AGPA Connect are presented to a student training in child and adolescent group psychotherapy.
Smith Giesbrecht Canadian Scholarship
This scholarship will support a Canadian therapist (with preference to those involved with the Toronto Institute for Group Studies) who demonstrates a commitment to group therapy as a life-long career focus. It will include two sequential years of attendance at AGPA Connect, travel support, and a stipend for supervision/consultation during the interlude between the two conferences. The Scholarship was endowed by Joan-Dianne Smith and James Giesbrecht in memory of their son, David Smith Giesbrecht, who died suddenly in 2024 and was committed to life-long learning, attachment and connection.
Southwestern Group Psychotherapy Scholarship
The fund will support a scholarship for AGPA Connect for a student, resident, or new professional residing in Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Arizona.The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Karen S. Travis Scholarship
The Karen S. Travis Scholarship Fund will support a scholarship for AGPA Connect for an early career professional working with underserved populations, either currently running groups or with a strong interest in doing so. It will cover up to a six-day registration for the meeting and a travel stipend.
Kathleen Hubbs Ulman, Ph.D. Scholarship
The Ulman Scholarship Fund supports a student or early career professional, who demonstrates clinical promise in group psychotherapy and needs financial support to attend AGPA Connect. It will cover up to a 6-day meeting registration and a travel stipend. Dr. Kathleen Ulman, Ph.D., AGPA-DLF, CGP a long-time AGPA member endowed the scholarship in memory of her husband, Richard Ulman, and her parents, Hazel and Widmer Hubbs, who supported her dedication to the group therapy profession.
Robert E. White, M.D. and Sara Jane White, Ph.D. Scholarship
The White’s Scholarship Fund supports psychiatric residents, with preference given to those from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to AGPA Connect and includes a travel stipend.
Lorraine and Dan Wodiska Family Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated to supporting AGPA attendees who identify as transgender, and is intended for students, early career professionals, and agency attendees. The scholarship will cover up to a 6-day registration for AGPA Connect as well as a travel stipend. With this scholarship, The Wodiska Family with this scholarship seeks to create a safe space where transgender colleagues feel seen and truly welcomed within AGPA. More than financial support, it is an embrace—a way of saying: “you belong here, your voice matters, and you are not alone.”
Donated Scholarships
Those not eligible for or are not awarded endowed scholarships are automatically considered for tuition-only scholarships supported by individual donations and grants to the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health.
