Group Therapy Will be Key for Mental Health Access and New Website Will Serve as Resource

The American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) announced the launch of an Evidence-Based Group Treatment Website on February 12, 2024, at https://evidencebasedgrouptherapy.org/, developed by an international team led by AGPA President Gary Burlingame and Bernhard Strauss, with support from the American Psychological Association’s Division 49, AGPA, the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health, and the German Health Ministry. The website provides resources on effective, disorder-specific group therapy treatments, addressing the U.S. mental health crisis by promoting group therapy’s “Triple E” benefits: effectiveness for conditions like depression and anxiety, equivalence to individual therapy outcomes, and efficiency in increasing access by allowing therapists to treat more clients. Research cited from the American Psychologist indicates that shifting 10% of unmet psychotherapy needs to group therapy could serve 3.3 million more people, reduce the need for 34,473 additional therapists, and save $5.6 billion in costs. The website aims to enhance practitioner training and expand evidence-based group therapy protocols, particularly in private practice and agencies, to alleviate care bottlenecks.
