Training Program in
Group Psychotherapy
-
2022 - 2023

The 2022-2023 class of the EGPS Training Program in Group Psychotherapy will be held online!

The EGPS Training Program is a concentrated, psychodynamically oriented training program designed to accommodate therapists in clinics, agencies, and private practice. Through three essential weekly components: Group Consultation, A Didactic Class, and an Experiential Group, the training is structured to provide a foundation of competence in conducting both long-term and time-limited group psychotherapy.

In addition, the Training Program addresses racial and social justice issues in group work. The Program continuously strives to be diverse, inclusive, equitable and representative of our student body.

The program meets weekly from mid-September through mid-June on Zoom. The Consultation Group Component of the Program meets from 5:30 -7:00 PM on either Monday, Wednesday or Thursday. The Didactic and Experiential Group Components meet on Wednesday from 7:15 - 10:00 PM ONLY.

The faculty is composed of senior members of the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society and the American Group Psychotherapy Association. A certificate is awarded upon completion of the program. The Training Program, with an option for additional consultation (see Advanced Training Sequel below), is designed to meet the educational and supervisory requirements for inclusion in the International Board of Certification for Group Psychotherapy.

Rolling Admissions until August 1st, 2022: Submit your application immediately to be considered for the upcoming September, 2022 - June, 2023 class!

Partial scholarships may be available.

ADVANCED TRAINING SEQUEL - ONLINE

Weekly Group Consultation
(provides 30 hours towards the CGP credential)
Graduates of the EGPS Training Program, or its equivalent, can opt to pursue training via advanced consultation which helps to refine leadership skills. Group therapists, relatively new to leading groups, delve into the challenges they face in doing group therapy. With the help of a seasoned group practitioner, the consultation group processes clinical dilemmas, psychodynamic and theoretical questions which promote integration of all three domains.

One year of this additional consultation fulfills the supervisory requirements of the Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) credential. Trainees meet in a weekly group for 90 minute sessions, 30 in the academic year, typically in the office of the consultation group leader.

Our application can be found here. A third year may be offered for those wanting to further develop their group leadership skills.

he Brookline Center for Community Mental Health & The Northeastern Society of Group Psychotherapy Observation Groups

The NSGP is proud and excited to collaborate with The Brookline Center for Community Mental Health in offering two Observation Groups as part of our training program. This represents a collaboration between NSGP and The Brookline Center to promote this remarkable learning opportunity. These are two long-running, well-established interpersonal process groups that are led by some of Boston's most veteran group therapists. Observers are invited to sit silently in the room during each session, and then to discuss the group after the members leave.

Two Observation Groups are available.

Group 1 is led by Annie Weiss, LICSW, CGP, FAGPA, and Tracy MacNab, Ph.D., CGP, who alternate leading the group individually on 10-week intervals. This group meets on Thursday mornings from 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM.

Group 2 is led by Joel Krieg, LICSW, CGP and Julie Anderson, Ph.D., CGP who co-lead together. This group meets on Tuesday mornings from 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM.

Much like enrolling in a course, observers commit to a minimum 10-week window of observation. This is both to ensure the comfort of group members as well as to support the observers' learning. Observers also pay a covering fee of $200 per observation interval. There is a 50% discount available to NSGP members.

For more information about expectations of observers, payment information, or scheduling, please visit the Brookline Center website.

If you're interested in Group Observation at the Brookline Center or have any questions, please call or email Jeff Brand, Psy.D., Adult Group Therapy Co-coordinator at the Center.

He can be reached at (617) 277-8107, or at [email protected].

NSGP Scholarship Program

Scholarships may be available for the Experiential Group Training and Principles Course. If funds are available, partial scholarships will be awarded based on application strength, financial need, passion/interest for group therapy, and involvement in NSGP.
